since 1921
“The year nineteen twenty-one on the twenty-fifth day of September …” so says the “instrument” with which my great-grandfather Giovanni Spasari – pictured here with his wife and his grandchildren – bought “for the price paid of thirty-five thousand lire two rustic funds called Pantano and Castellace in the countryside of Badolato ”.
This man – building contractor, but with a passion for the countryside –
had thought of the farm as a quiet place to spend with his wife – Antonietta Ciciarelli, formerly a woman teacher in the elementary school of Badolato – their only daughter Franceschina – married to the elementary teacher Salvatore Cosenza – and the brood of grandchildren (no less than eight), the long and sunny days of the Calabrian summers away from the “bustle” and heat of the town.

Tenuta Pantano produces superior quality extra virgin olive oil – certified by the most important laboratory for the analysis of food oils and fats in Italy, recognized by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies – the result of a path that combines passion, tradition and research.
Our olives are harvested in the veraison phase in a specific period in October lasting about 10 days, when the olive embodies the best organoleptic qualities and the oil that is extracted expresses the highest “nautical” characteristics (nutritional and pharmaceutical), while sacrificing the quantity extracted.

In 2015 Tenuta Pantano planted 1,200 new olive trees of the Coratina, Leccino and Moraiolo cultivars, built the well and the “drip” irrigation system, started collaborations with university professors to develop the plantation and improve the quality of the product, invests in equipment for olive harvesting and oil storage according to the most advanced conservation techniques.
At the same time, a path aimed at the vegetative recovery of the 300 secular olive trees is started, through targeted pruning and fertilization actions, the pedological characteristics of the soil are studied for the correct nourishment of the same and reform interventions are carried out to obtain planting layouts suitable to allow suitable for the use of the most consolidated agronomic techniques.
